Poor Man's Sniper Rifle
A How-To Guide
by Bob Cashner
Until recently, owning a scout/utility rifle was basically a high-cost proposition. Even when commercial versions surfaced, they carried a hefty price tag. Now, hobbyist and scout enthusiast Bob Cashner offers viable options for the do-it-yourselfer. Using common tools and easy-to-come-by parts, Cashner has fashioned his own home-built scouts from a variety of tried-and-true, battle-tested military actions, from the 98 Mauser and Mosin-Nagant to the venerable Springfield. A nonpurist at heart, he has also built semiauto versions based on the M1 Garand, M1 carbine, Ruger Mini-14 and SKS. Each of his creations cost him less than a quarter of what the commercial models would have. Here he provides step-by-step directions for building his favorite scouts, including guidelines for key modifications such as a forward-mounted intermediate-eye-relief scope, backup iron sights, a synthetic stock (if the budget allows) and more, followed by instructions for disassembly and a breakdown of costs. He also includes instructions for building a .22 LR practice scout, discussions about the various loads suited to the scout rifle and an overview of that all-important accessory, the shooting sling. 8 1/2 x 11, softcover, photos, illus., 128 pp.

Running Recon
A Photo Journey with SOG Special Ops Along the Ho chi Minh Trail
A combination memoir and combat photography book, Running Recon reflects both the author’s experiences in the top-secret Studies and Observation Group (SOG) from April 1969 to April 1970 and the collective experiences of SOG veterans in general. What sets it apart from other Vietnam books is its wealth of more than 700 photographs, many never before published, from the author’s personal collection and those of his fellow SOG veterans. Frank Greco had these photos because after running recon with Command and Control Central (CCC) for eight months, he was put in charge of CCC’s photo lab at Kontum. His duties included developing photos taken by the teams on their cross-border missions and taking photos on aerial reconnaissance missions. When a fire destroyed the lab during his last days in Vietnam, he rescued hundreds of photos, and when he returned to the States in 1970 he brought them home. If he had not, they would have been destroyed by government order in 1972 when SOG was disbanded, and an irreplaceable historic resource would have been lost forever. New details and photos of SOG’s best-known mission, Operation Tailwind, are also included.

8.5"x11", Softcover, 700+ Photos, Color Maps, 458 Pages.
